KamAZ to start churning out “smart trucks” next year

KamAZ, Russia’s largest truck manufacturer based in Tatarstan, has slated for next year the launch of its production project to make trucks, dump trucks, crawler vehicles and buses equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) autonomous driving solutions capable of warning the driver of danger and correcting a route if collision is imminent, portal Hi-news.ru .

The source quoted a KamAZ spokesman as saying that the new system will “help the driver stop his vehicle in front of an obstacle, pinpoint a pedestrian and recognize traffic signs, warning him of what it sees or making its own decision.”

The Tatarstan truck manufacturer has already come up with a prototype called “Warning,” and is testing it on special test fields outside Moscow. The prototype can reportedly move in three modes, including remote control, pre-set routes with the ability to skirt obstacles, and platooning to follow a leader.

KamAZ is also expected to soon complete its new vehicles with autonomous braking capability to prevent collisions. Tests are scheduled for November this year.

Marchmont that the Tatarstan auto maker has plans to send its mass-produced driverless vehicles to the Russian roads by 2020 already.
